Habits That Drivers Pick Up Over Time
Driving, much like riding a bicycle, is easier when you’re not thinking about every movement you’re making. Overthinking in driving can lead to mistakes or accidents on the road. But there’s a fine line between not overthinking and being careless on the road. Sometimes, it’s difficult to tell one from the other, especially if driving has become second nature for you. It is vital to your safety that you can detect whether you’ve developed a bad habit (or five). Here are some of the most common bad habits drivers pick up over time.
1. Being careless when changing lanes
You’ve done it a thousand times before, but changing lanes is one of the most dangerous activities in driving. Many people forget this and become lazy or careless when they change lanes. The most common faults are forgetting (or ignoring) to use signal lights when about to change lanes, or not checking their blind spot to determine that the way is clear before they start to move out of their lane.
2. Not paying full attention to the road
Whether it’s fumbling with the radio, sending a quick text on your phone or even styling your hair in the rearview mirror, being distracted from the road can be a costly (and even harmful) mistake. Always make sure that you keep your full attention on the road when you’re driving. A small slip in concentration can cause a big accident: a lot can happen in an instant.
3. Road rage
As experienced drivers, it’s easy to feel entitled to your place on the road. Whether you’re in a hurry and can’t stand the traffic, or you’ve become impatient with a fellow driver who has made a mistake, it’s easy for tempers to quickly flare. In times like this, remember that you don’t own the public roads and that other drivers have just as much right to make a mistake as you do. Even if you’re in the right, it’s often better to let your temper cool down before attempting to resolve any issues on the road.
4. Tailgating
The more you drive, the better you’ll learn to control your car. For some drivers, however, this makes them lazy and they no longer follow proper safety measures. Many drivers become complacent with tailgating because they think they can easily manoeuver their car whenever they want. But as mentioned earlier, a lot can happen in an instant. Tailgating makes that instant a lot shorter and leaves you even less room to adjust if the car ahead of you were to suddenly brake in response to changing traffic conditions. Be safe and avoid tailgating.
5. Speeding
For many drivers, the longer they drive and avoid accidents, the riskier they may become. Drivers may chose to exceed the speed limit because they are in a hurry to get somewhere or they may not have paid enough attention to speed-limit signs and are no longer aware of the proper speed limit. Remember to stay alert and never let your driving confidence turn into overconfidence on the road.
Road accidents can be very costly, not to mention traumatising, for all parties involved. If you’re involved in a motor vehicle accident of any kind, make sure to consult with legal experts like Sinnamon Lawyers, who are specialists in motor vehicle accidents and personal injury claims.
Remember not to become complacent and pick up bad driving habits. If any of these habits are familiar to you, it’s time to make a change.
