Delaying the Dreaded Tasks

27/08/2012 By All Mum Said 12 Comments

I have a habit of putting particular household tasks on the back burner. The main one or I should say the one that I see most often is the folding of clean clothes. Every time it piles up to extreme masses, taking up 5 washing baskets full minimum (no exaggeration) I kick myself and swear I won’t ever let it get that bad again.

And yet each and every time I let it happen over and over again. I get into the swing of it just after I have spent hours folding them all and stick with it for a week or so but then get slack and it all piles back up. Then I get to kick myself all over again.

It is at the point now where I am searching through the baskets to find underwear and the kids’ school socks. How did I let it get this bad? When did it get this bad? I swear only yesterday there was one basket that was barely full – I promise!

It’s just that I hate doing it – I would much prefer to be doing other things! Like cooking, reading or dare I say it cleaning the toilet! That is how much I hate having to fold the clothes.

Is there some secret way to keep motivated that I just don’t know about? Am I the only who can’t stand this chore? Or better yet, anyone want to come and do mine for me?

I have my washing kind of under control. I hang my washing so when its time to pick it I fold it right then and their. I also only ever do one load of washing at a time. So that means I do a load for me and dh, a load for the younger two and a load for the older two. 3 loads of washing a week maybe add one for towels and any bed sheets for the week. I also like to listen to music while I’m doing it.

I’m glad your system works for you! I generally run on the no plan plan and if it gets done it does. The washing is always done; just the folding that is a problem!

Yeah I wish that I had the secret to share, please pass it on if someone knows!
The washing is the bane of my existence as well. Though I am currently on the cycle of having under control, I know it won’t last long!

hahaha yeah my control over it never lasts long either. Why can’t it fold itself?

I doesn’t help completely but we have instituted a “no fold necessary” policy to non work clothes. That way you just grab what you need and let it self iron with body heat – seriously – self iron.

There is no secret to keeping on top of washing…or if there is I haven’t discovered it. With 4 people in my family + a 2 bedroom B&B to wash linen for, my basket is always overflowing. I curse my laundry daily.

Someone on Facebook said something about timing how long tasks take, and then when you realise that it doesnt take that long, you can do it more often? So if folding one basket takes 10 minutes, you can think ‘well its only ten minutes’ and then just do it! That’s my thinking when it comes to combatting the dishes and to works. Most jobs don’t actually take that long.
