Let’s face it, kids can turn your spotless house into something that resembles a cyclonic episode in a matter of minutes. I hope you enjoyed those sacred moments while they lasted!
I have always been a firm believer in children learning to pick up after themselves from a young age and as they grow, so do their responsibilities. It is not only beneficial for them but it also lightens the load on me. Is that lazy or smart? I’m going with genius, for now anyway!
Cleaning with kids
As the kids have grown they have each had an interest in vacuuming, I suppose it is because they see me doing it and want to be involved. Whatever the reason, I am not complaining. My only issue over the years has been that our vacuums have been too heavy for them to take control and do it solo. Until now…
For the past few weeks I have been basking in the glory of the new Dyson V6 Absolute vacuum cleaner. I was offered one to review and I am so glad I said yes! I have been a Dyson fan girl and owner for the past 8 years and I doubt I will ever stray from the brand. They have always done an impeccable job and I cannot fault them.
My house is approx. 70% tiles and 30% carpet; so having a vacuum that is light, easy and doesn’t require additional effort to transfer between the two is ideal. The Dyson V6 Absolute does exactly that in a small compact handheld vacuum. Like most homes; the kitchen, dining and living rooms are the high traffic areas that require constant attention (especially when there are kids inhabiting there). This handy little handheld makes it so convenient for quick tidy ups, spot cleans, once overs and if your home is small enough, possibly even your general clean.
Cleaner heads
The Dyson V6 Absolute comes standard with two Dyson-engineered cleaner heads. Using a combination of the two, they combat both large debris and fine dust, carpet and hard floors. I was so impressed with the amount of dirt and dust that this vacuum can pull from the carpets.
The fluffy cleaning roller is ideal for hard floors, including wood and tiles. The suction and seal created by the woven fibres sends the dirt and dust directly into the dust bin instead of having to backtrack a few times to ensure you got it all.
The direct drive motor head has bristles that drive deeper into the carpet allowing for better suction where it is most needed. This ultimately removes more dirt than you can even see in your carpet.
Battery life
Like most of the Dyson handhelds, the V6 Absolute offers up to 20 minutes run time on standard. If you require more power for a particular job, push the MAX button on the back for an extreme amount of suction. This will reduce you battery life to 6 minutes.
While this is not a huge duration of time, it is ample to get those tidy ups and spot cleans done with ease.
Cleaning and maintenance
Like all vacuums, they require some degree of cleaning or maintenance.
- For starters, the hygienic bin requires emptying. This can be done quickly and simply by pressing the button to release the dirt.
- There is one filter that requires cleaning. That is as easy to clean as pulling out of the top, washing under the tap and letting it dry before placing it back into position.
- Like all rotating cleaner heads; hair, string, etc. gets caught around it and should be removed before causing the performance to lag.
Performance
I could not be more impressed with how well this little machine works. I also love that it is light weight enough for the kids to use. This eliminates the need for me to have to constantly clean up after them, they can now pull out the Dyson V6 Absolute and tidy up their own messes. That’s a huge win in my book! Not to mention they think it is fun.
Extra tools
Like every Dyson, they come standard with a range of tools that are designed to make jobs around the home easier. From removing dust and dirt from hard-to-reach places around the home to cleaning tight spaces in the car, these tools have you covered.
The docking station allows you to store and charge your vacuum both conveniently and neatly. The dock also holds additional attachments.
I find I use this the most in our lounge rooms, living room, bathrooms, around the dining table and under the breakfast bar. ]]>Summer in Australia can be an absolute scorcher, frequently reaching well over 40°C. Keeping cool is a constant struggle and for some running an air conditioner non-stop for months is not an option. We all know it is an energy sucker that costs a fortune, especially with rising electricity costs. In my home I am lucky enough to have ceiling fans but I know many don’t and rely on pedestal fans that frequently need replacing. I’m not saying ceiling fans eliminate all heat created but it does help. Unfortunately there are 2 places in my home that require that extra burst of cool air and they are my office and the kitchen.
Dyson Cool Review
Both these spaces have only minimal room that can occupied by a cooling device and the pedestal fan just doesn’t cut it. The Dyson Cool however fits the requirements perfectly! In my office I am limited to a 15cm section on a shelf for my fan and while that doesn’t seem like a lot, it is more than enough for my new Dyson. Tilting easily and pivoting on its own centre of gravity means I can set it my specific needs. It provides me with not only smooth, high-velocity airflow but it is also extremely quiet and doesn’t distract me when I’m trying to work. If only I could occasionally put my kids on Dyson function and make them 75% quieter! A mother can dream.
As I am a busy mum there are a few features that are must haves when making purchases for my home. Safety, easy to clean & simple to use. With my youngest being 18 months old she like to explore, touch and put everything to the test so safety is obviously the major factor. The Dyson Cool AM06 (like all Dyson fans) have no blades spinning fast. You can put your hand through the centre and know your child will not be injured by the bladeless fan. Safe = YES.
As I mentioned above, I also use my Dyson desk fan in the kitchen. It sits perfectly on the bench and keeps me cool while I’m slaving baking away. Due to the mess that is often created in the kitchen with grease, spatters and general dirtiness I needed my fan to be easy to keep clean. Again the Dyson Cool has ticked that box. Simply wipe it down and it looks like new! Easy to clean = YES.
As I’m often on the run doing a million things at once, the older two kids (aged 7 and 5) will often be delegated jobs to help me achieve everything I need to get done. They are often asked to turn the fan on for me and can do this ease. It is one of their favourite things at the moment. The novelty of putting their hands (and heads) through the middle hasn’t quite worn off yet but than it hasn’t for Mr C either so who can blame the kids. The tiny remote makes it so simple to use. There are 4 buttons – Off/On, Swing (Oscillation) Off/On, Speed Up/Down and a timer. Yes that’s right, you can set the timer so you don’t have to get up and turn it off if you are using it in the nursery or childs’ room for example. Simple to use = YES.

]]>Up until recently my 7 year old vacuum cleaner hadn’t had a service, or any vacuum cleaner maintenance. Ever. Yep I am that person who thinks a machine can keep going and going and maintain the same quality of work it did when it was new. I have now discovered since the near death of my Dyson that a service can bring it back to a well working sucker that is ready to take on the mess of children once again. Now that I think about it, it is just like servicing a car. If you skip the maintenance it eventually stops running smoothly.
The kind service man and engineer Chris who works at Dyson emailed me through pictures about the journey my vacuum cleaner took while in their care. Here is the adventure of my Dyson DC24.
DC24 before service
One your machine is received; our engineer Chris assessed it top to bottom for anything that shouldn’t be.
The Ball, which houses the motor of your machine is removed, and given a thorough cleaning. 
The brushbar is removed, the cleanerhead is cleaned, then the brushbar is replaced with a brand new brushbar.
The cyclone assembly is cleaned out and the bin washed.
Both filters are replaced as both a hygiene precaution and to ensure the machine will work as good as new.
Towards the end of the service, the cleaner head of the machine is removed, and the suction is tested to ensure it is as strong as day one.
Finally, we run numerous electrical safety checks to ensure the machine is safe to leave us.
Once the machine has been fully repaired and tested, it is then ready to leave us, to provide you with more years of service.
The convenience of having it delivered back to my door was great and I wasn’t without my vacuum for long which is great. They were fast, efficient and now my cleaner works great. The customer service was brilliant, they emailed me each time something new was going on (eg. received, being worked on, dispatched).

]]>So we all know that cleaning the house is one of those painstaking jobs that seem to be repeating like Groundhog Day, especially when there are children in the house. The Dyson CineticTM DC54 is everything and more that I’d want in a vacuum cleaner! It contains no bags or filters which means no stuffing around and trying to remember to replace, purchase and clean anything – just empty when the hygienic bin is full and off you go again. My house is quite large and I have to empty it every 2nd time I vacuum which isn’t too bad. It is also very easy to empty; simply press a button and empty directly into your bin. The Dyson Digital Slim DC59 is a mean piece of equipment if you’re looking for something compact and cordless. It’s lightweight at only 2kg yet has been designed to provide the sucking power of a full size machine. I love how easy it is to manoeuvre into all the hard to reach places that are always painful to clean and since the new V6 motor has been designed specifically for this machine it is one and a half times more powerful than the previous version of the motor. I own a DC44 which has the previous motor and there is so much difference. While mine works great for what I use it for the DC59 is a clear winner if I were looking to purchase another cordless. I love this machine for quick tidy ups because it is simply quicker than plugging in the big vacuum for a small mess. The battery lasts for 20 minutes which is more than sufficient for what I have been using it for however for anything more than that I would use a mains vacuum cleaner because I couldn’t vacuum my whole house in 20 minutes. ]]>The words ‘I love cleaning’ have never come out of my mouth. I am a mother who enjoys the comfort of having a clean home and being able to smell the ‘cleanliness’ but I hate the effort that is actually required to achieve such effects. It’s never spotless but it’s clean. As every parent knows, when you have children your clean house is only ever clean for about a 5 minute duration before they have lunch or race inside after playing in the dirt.
I hated having to drag out the vacuum cleaner for a small mess. Yes I know – first world problems. It seemed like such a hassle to have to unroll the cord, plug it in and then re-roll it for a few measly crumbs. So me being me I set out to find a vacuum that was easy to use, didn’t require to be plugged in every time I had a small mess to clean but one that was still efficient enough that it worked. I found it! The Dyson DC44 – it is supposed to be for animals (kids are animals right?) but it is also a multi-floor vacuum so I don’t need to adjust anything when moving from surface to surface. I already have a Dyson DC24 HEPA and it is still going strong after 4 or 5 years. As you can imagine after having a vacuum cleaner that lasts this long and still runs like new I have no problems in recommending Dyson to anyone and everyone who will listen.
DC44 – I love the gorgeous pink colour! They also come in blue.
DC24 – Looks pretty good for how old it is!
I have been giving the new DC44 an absolute flogging. It gets used for most messes, the cars, my bathroom floor (remind me never again to NEVER choose black tiles for my bathrooms, the dust shows back up after 2 days!), inside the window frames and of course the lounges. I don’t know how I went without this convenience for so long, the only thing better would be if it didn’t require my assistance at all to clean. It comes with a docking station that charges the battery along with extra attachments for the different jobs you could want to do. The sucking power is extraordinary for something so light weight and versatile. I love that it doesn’t require bags or extra filters, it has a motorised head and comes with a 2 year parts and labour warranty but as I mentioned earlier my DC24 is still going strong after years!
It’s official – I love my Dyson cleaners and I have my husband to thank for that. He so kindly purchased our first one for us. I remember saying to him I am not spending that much on a vacuum cleaner but now I am so glad we did. It has truly proven its value.
