How To Keep Active And Incorporate Kids

keep active and incorporate kids

Keeping active with young kids is difficult. Difficult but not impossible!

We hear every day that it is important to stay healthy, keep active and look after your health but for some families it is not as easy as just going off and doing it. Sometimes parents need to get creative with the ways they incorporate fitness into their daily regime.

Get the kids involved and stay fit as a family

Keeping fit as a family is a great way to encourage and instill a healthy lifestyle for your children now and in the future. Try these easy to achieve activities to stay active and include your kids.

Sport

Whether you are big sport fans or not, by going down to your local sporting oval and kicking the football or soccer ball around is a way to burn off extra energy. Throwing the Frisbee is another great choice because it is also a lot of fun and requires bursts of running, leaping and stretching.

Explore

Get out of the house and explore your surroundings. If you are lucky enough to have National Parks  or walking tracks nearby (click the link for information in your state or territory), these are a great way to introduce fitness with the great outdoors to your children. They can learn about nature while embarking on adventures in different terrains and be able to enjoy amazing views once they arrive!

Swim

Swimming is not only a crucial life skill, it is also a great option for fitness. The water allows you to feel lighter but also provides resistance when swimming laps or having races with the kids.
Also playing games like Marco Polo, Water Volleyball, Gladiator shoulder rides, mermaid races and diving comps are a great way to have fun while working those muscles.

Backyard fun

These activities don’t cost a sent because you already have the gear.
Trampolining – the jumping and bouncing provides your body a full workout while having fun.
Cricket – If your backyard isn’t large enough the local sports oval will be just fine.
Totem tennis – It encourages hand eye coordination and works your arm muscles.
Skipping – Having skipping challenges with the kids a great way to get them involved.
Weights – I’m not talking about gym weights, use the kids. Lift them up, hold them and then lower. Repeat. Repeat and repeat. Workout for you and fun for them!

Dance

Who doesn’t love to dance? Dancing not only relieves stress but it also gets your blood pumping and works up a sweat. Add in some well-known exercise moves like lunges and burpees and you have yourself a 3 minute workout!

Fitness at the park

These days it isn’t uncommon to see workout stations at a children’s playground. This is because parents want to be able to keep fit while they have young children and these stations make it possible. The benefit to these are that parents can watch and talk to their children while they are moving and exercising. It is the best of both worlds for mums/dads and kids.

Yoga and Pilates

While this is not everyone’s cup of tea, for some it is the perfect start to the day. As a result, there are becoming an increasing amount of family sessions where both parents and children can enjoy the benefits for these classes. There are several health insurance providers that offer these types of classes as an extras option on certain policies. Click here to find out more!

Your health is crucial and while it can be difficult to work out or be as active as you would like, it isn’t impossible. By implementing the suggestions above, you can encourage your children to get active with you and promote a healthy way of life.

It’s time to put your health first, improve your wellbeing and get back on track!

We all lead busy lives and often put our health on the back burner. Unfortunately after a while this just becomes a way of life and it needs to change. NOW! Improve your health with these easy steps.

Health, wellbeing, you!

There is not any one way to improve your body’s health and fitness, there are thousands, millions even. Here are five easy steps to implement this change:

Exercise

We all know exercise is good for us but many think they are too time poor to do it. A simple walk in the sunshine will do amazing things for your health. The fresh air, the endorphins and being active have benefits that exceed just physical health, it assists with keeping mentally strong as well. This is a common choice of exercise for many however others prefer faster paced workouts like the gym, boot camp or alternative exercise programs.

Sleep

Going to sleep at the same time each night and getting a decent number of hours rest allows your body to recharge and start the day on the right foot. When your sleep patterns are irregular, your body doesn’t fully relax and get the respite it requires to be at its best. When you and your body are tired, it doesn’t function to its full potential. Concentration is down, moodiness sets in and you lack the energy to get motivated.

Eat Well

Eating well is crucial for your health. I’m not saying cut out all the treats you love because I am a firm believer in eating what you enjoy, but everything has to be in moderation. Ideally you should be eating small meals frequently throughout the day to assist your digestive system in doing its job efficiently. When your digestion isn’t functioning correctly, your body doesn’t absorb all the nutrients required to give you the energy boosts to easily get through the day.
It is also important to not skip meals! For more information on healthy eating click the link.

Laugh

As silly as it may sound, laughing boosts your body’s health. It relaxes you and relieves your muscles from built up stress and tension. Laughing improves your mood, boosts your energy and reduces risk of heart disease.

Relax

Relaxing can be achieved in so many different ways. It can be as simple as getting a good book and sitting under a shady tree in the fresh air, going for a run or reclining in your chair and enjoying a movie. Other options include getting a massage, acupuncture or even yoga.

improve your health relax

Australians are becoming increasingly stressed about the rising cost of living in addition to many other situations and circumstances. Click here to see what the main causes of stress in Australia are. Financial strains have puts luxuries like massages and gym memberships on hold.

What people don’t realise is that with private health insurance you get a large chunk of that money back in your pocket. Yes I realise private health cover costs you money, sometimes it can cost ridiculous amounts. But it doesn’t have to. By comparing health funds to get the best possible deal for you and your family, you may even be surprised that you can afford it without having to sacrifice a lot.

Get the cover you need to improve your health at the best available price right here!

Encouraging children to stay active is proving harder these days with so many gaming devices, smartphones, tablets, etc. enticing them to play games online and using the latest and ‘so-called’ greatest kids apps. LeapFrog have realised this issue and have released the LeapBand which is basically a fit band for kids. It isn’t over the top exercise based but it does encourage physical activity. Featuring 50 different activities and challenges the LeapBand is designed for kids to get them moving and having fun. Like we have all come to expect from LeapFrog the activity tracking LeapBand is educational in numeracy and literacy but it doesn’t end there. It also teaches children how to establish healthy habits and exercise through everyday play.

leapband

B1 and B2 have been using their LeapBand for the past 2 weeks and have reported that they love it! By fulfilling the activity prompts they earn jewels (joules energy gems) that can than be used to unlock extra features and new rewards. In addition to the exercise and healthy habits, they can also name, customise and play with their virtual pet while also taking care of it. B1 and B2 have shared a few of their favourite features: collecting a treasure chest of jewels (who would’ve guessed, a boy who loves treasure chests?! haha), feeding the virtual pet, it has a stopwatch and also doubles as an analogue or digital watch. I love that it doesn’t require batteries to be changed regularly and is as simple as plugging the USB into the computer to charge it, the colour screened LeapBand also features a battery meter so the kids know if it is going to need charging soon.

leapband

For parents who are concerned it will be a distraction at certain times of the day, don’t fear as the parental settings allow you to set school hours and quiet times. It is also water resistant so a little splash of water or sweat will not affect the use. For more information check out the LeapFrog Australia website. Designed for children aged 4-7 years and RRP $59.99.

GET UP!

GET ACTIVE!

GET MOVING!

Disclosure: I was gifted with 1x LeapFrog LeapBand for the purpose of this review. All opinions are my own or that of my children.

For the past month my family and I have been giving the XBOX Kinect a run for its money. We have been talking to Elmo, Grover and the Cookie Monster while walking the neighbourhood of Sesame Street. Throwing coconuts high, dancing in magic mirrors and having Elmo copy and tell us how awesome we are. He changes to his shirt to look just like us too! I am so impressed with the Kinect SesameStreet TV and the kids just love how interactive it is.

We have also been trying the Kinect Nat Geo TV and must say that this one is my favourite. Not only is it also interactive but it is also interesting and educational. It teaches how the animals live, act, catch food and basically survive in the wild. This is than incorporated into the interactive side and you or the kids become the animals. They use the same movements the animals do – jumping, leaping, head butting, pouncing, clawing, etc. the same as goats, lions, bears, the list goes on.  I have found this to be a great work out for myself and an even better energy user for the kids.

We were lucky enough to be able to review these products and be loaned an Xbox to do so. We have enjoyed them so much we are now planning on buying the kids an Xbox Kinect for Christmas or more so Santa will. I just love that it combines new technology with knowledge, intereaction and appeals to every age. These fantastic games mentioned above are available in stores now.

All opinions are my own & always will be!
