We should have known!

01/08/2012 By All Mum Said 24 Comments

As you know I recently returned from a trip to Canada. My husband and I went with his sister and mother. Let me just say that never again will we ever (and I mean ever) go away with them again. Believe it or not my mother in law was not the problem.

I don’t know how one person can have so much but still think they have nothing. Someone who has a mother, father and brother who are always there for her even after she shits on them time and time again and yet still think she has no one who cares. I just don’t get it. I can understand having a moment, day or even a week of woe is me but this has been going on for as long as I have known her. That’s 10 years!

A decade of ‘poor me everyone else gets everything’ can get beyond tiring. You would think that for 2 weeks whilst on holiday you would or could be happy. Guess what – she couldn’t. It was a very long 2 weeks of complaining; because it turns out we all intruded on her holiday. We were all invited mind you but that’s beside the point. It would have been more enjoyable getting my teeth ripped out one by one without anaesthetic. Ok maybe it wasn’t that bad but I think you get my point.

The attitude had started before we even got through customs. We should have known then what the trip would entail. We did however get to have a few good days, actually great days! I will share more in the coming week of what we got up to. I have so many pictures to go through and decide what to write about.

Have you ever had to endure a holiday from hell? Maybe it was the place or maybe it was the people.

I would love to hear them all!

Yes. I will never share accommodation with 2 other families and their children ever again. we rented a 5 bedroom large house years ago. we shared the costs and apparently according to one of the kids i had told them that they were not allowed to do something and that sparked something and the rest of the trip was a disaster. then I had to apologies for something I didn’t do and thought that was it they were happy and we were all happy. But once we touched down in sydney (we flew to gold coast) it was all over again. these people were close family members and we said never again will we share accommodation again or ever

It can really go one of two ways cant it? Lessons are always learnt the hard way though. Thanks for sharing your experience :)

You have to be careful who you travel with – you can be great friends at home but the stress and confinement of travelling can really blow things up….Hope the rest of the trip was good! I’ve had a few shockers, having had years of easy going success, so it’s really opened my eyes to thinking carefully about even weekends away.

Yes I couldn’t agree more Lydia. It does cause a lot of stress, we had a few good days so it wasn’t all bad. All I can say is never again ;p

Urgh I’m sorry that your sister in law is such a bother. My husband and I almost went on holiday with my in laws, but we never got past the planning part because just the planning was causing so much drama I decided that there was NO way we could all travel together!

Consider yourself lucky you didn’t go through with it. I was more than happy not to go but my husband had nevver been to Canada before so it would have been a little unfair of me to say no. Thanks for commenting Lisa.

Oh man, that does not sound pleasant at all! I remember going up the coast once with Mr. Pj’s family and best friend to visit his grandparents for a week, and like your SIL, the best friend did nothing but whine and complain the whole time! It was exhausting! Needless to say we didn’t invite him along the following year and it was so much better!

All our family are overseas so every time we see them, we have to travel. High expectations are often never a good thing. All I can say is employ the old Smile & Nod strategy!

That is the exact strategy I use. My husband would not be impressed if I told her what I thought while we were away. Never mind we are home now :)

What a pity! My family is spread around the globe so the only time we all get together is when we are on holidays. Luckily it’s usually not long enough for us to get sick of each other :)

How lucky are you! The rest of the family is fine it’s just that one person. Every family has one!

We often go away with my family but never have with Mr’s family….praise the lord for that!

Your sister-in-law sounds so much like mine it’s scary.

It sucks that she managed to put a dampener on your holiday but I’m so pleased that you were able to get a few good days in.

I’m with Kim-Marie on this…I’m definitely a ‘Smile and Nod’ person – anything else isn’t worth the effort.

My family is fine also and so is the rest of his but yes everyone has that 1 person that they cannot do it with for more than a night or 2. Yep the smile and nod approach. Its safe.

My 19th birthday I went away with my (then) boyfriend. Fights, fights, and more fights! To top it off he decided to have one of these woe is me days on my actual birthday. I could’ve killed him! Glad you got a few good days!

Ugh. That sounds awful. My MIL keeps suggesting that we all go on holidays together. I keep politely declining. A holiday is supposed to be a…holiday. Know what I’m sayin’ ?
