I was a bit oblivious to lice when my eldest started school and the first time I found lice was obviously after a week or so and she had the biggest infestation. I felt like the worlds worst Mum as I had assumed she was only scratching because she wasn’t used to her hair tied up for school everyday. I ended up asking my brother who swore the best way was to absolutely smother the hair in vinegar and wrap hair up in a tea towel for 15 minutes ( which kills the lice ). Then smother the hair in oil ( olive, canola…any ) a few times and comb it all out ( the oil releases the eggs from the hair ). Repeat the second step a few times. Then hop in the shower and clean that super oily – yet lice free – hair!!
This lice treatment felt like it took half a day and was definitely far from enjoyable for anyone…. and needed to be repeated a few weeks later… GRRR. My friend then lent us one of those brushes that shocks and kills lice… OUCH OUCH OUCH. My daughter cried so much…….. So preventative is the best option!!! My daughters always have sparkling clean hair which is tied up neatly, and I alternate between a watered down tea tree spray ( don’t want them know as the kids with smelly hair haha ) and a preventative spray. So far so good, but we are late to school everyday because of my need to do braids, plaits and everything in between!!
