My Struggle As A Mum To Keep Fit

Keeping fit as a mum of four should be easy, right? I am constantly running around after four energiser bunnies that need around the clock shit done for them.

In theory I should have at bare minimum my pre-baby figure (insert hysterical laughter!) but in reality that is far from the truth. Apparently all of this running around just isn’t enough. After my first two kids were born I lost weight relatively easy, not quite pre-baby but I was happyish. I then quit smoking and gained a whopping 10kg, shortly after I fell pregnant and gained even more. My weight yoyo’d and even though I became comfortable with it, I wasn’t happy.

Skip forward to the present and I have had yet another baby (last one I swear!!), and this time I am determined to do something about it. I want to get fit, I want to be healthy and I don’t want to be repulsed by what I see in the mirror anymore.

My husband and I love the outdoors, we love getting our adventure on and so we thought this could be our thing. No more going to lunch every days off to have quality time, let’s be active together instead.

This was working a treat! While the kids were at school we would strap bub to my back and hit the bush, the mountains, and the beach. The weight was shifting and muscles were returning to places I forgot muscles once lived. I was getting fitter, my stamina was improving, I felt healthier and I could notice I was getting smaller, particularly in my face.

Then I got sick and Bronchitis took hold so I had to take a break from the cold air. Naturally my husband also got sick (he had man-flu so his was so much worse than mine) and subsequently the kids did too. This resulted in about a month off from our physical regime we had going and bad habits took hold yet again.

Anyway, we have gotten back into our hiking and to my surprise my muscles have started to reappear after just a few vigorous sessions. They were hard going, my muscles ached and I sweat it out but the view, the adrenalin and knowing that it is doing my body the world of good makes it totally worth it!

I am working on snacking less (or more so snacking right) and eating better but as any busy mum or dad will know, this is not always easy. With school holidays now here, I will be incorporating the kids in to exercise and get them outside at the same time!

    The snacking right is hard when you’re at home. It can be so boring and you just want a treat…I tend not to snack so much but I do go the junk option if out and I have to buy lunch…

    I totally need to do this. My weight has slowly increased over the last few months, and I think exercising together as a family would be so beneficial. You look great!

    I love the idea of walking together instead of lunching, I am so doing this with my hubby, who has just been put on some pretty heavy medication for hypertension.

    Good on you!
    Cancer has pretty much kicked my appetite for good. I struggle to eat anything now. I am trying to exercise to keep fit however.

    Injury and illness have meant that I haven’t so much as done my daily lunchtime walks for two months and boy can I feel it! Yuck. I know I’ll feel better when I can get back to it but that’s not quite yet.

    Snacks are definitely my weakness – I need to spend time preparing good ones so I don’t reach for the junk! Thanks for sharing your progress and tips. ?

    How do I keep fit with a kid . . . errrrr, I don’t, tbh. I do pilates once a week and am hoping to step up once the weather improves to some more deliberate walking.

    I have played netball up until 24 weeks pregnant with all of my babies. I have also completed yoga until I really couldn’t bend any more and then I switch it over to aqua until the baby is born. I love the feeling of being in the water whilst pregnant. I’m hoping that the weight is as easy to shift this time around [as it was with babies number one and two}.

    It is sooo hard! I have 12kgs to lose and beat myself up over it all the time. For me it’s getting the eating right. I’m trying to do 2 pilates classes a week too. I’d love to get back into running but I have some pubic pain I need to deal with first and get my muscles stronger before I’m allowed high impact. Finding the time is tough, not just with having to look after the kids but actually feeling awake enough to do it!

    I have reall been struggling with the weight gain. Having the twin toddlers at home and racing around town with my school aged kids has taken its toll- as had a nightly cocktail…or two. Time to get moving!

    I try to keep fit but have slacked off a lot lately as I have been so busy with other things. I find it really difficult to shift the weight from my thigh area; I have tried to find some exercises to target this area but haven’t found anything that is very effective so far. I do enjoy walking and cycling but the cooler weather always sees me making excuses much more than in the warmer months.

    I find it hard to lose my baby weight as well. Granted, my son is only two months so i probably should not rush it. Good luck on your journey back to health and body satisfaction.

    Hi Kell, I can totally relate to this post! I had to work hard trying to get off the baby weight after having my second child and finding time/ ways to exercise with a toddler is super challenging. I felt like I had finally returned to a decent size at the beginning of this year and then I promptly fell pregnant again at easter time! lol. So I now have 4 weeks to go till my next bub arrives…. 2017 will be a year of trying to get it all off again I think.
