Spriggy Review – Kids Pocket Money App

Teaching kids to save and manage their pocket money is something many parents struggle with. Could a kid’s pocket money app be the answer? This Spriggy review will answer the questions many parents want to know!

Spriggy review

In this day and age when swiping your debit card is the norm, it can be difficult to teach your children to manage their pocket money and learn to save.

Spriggy is the latest in kid’s pocket money apps and it could be the answer for many modern families looking at kids bank accounts and wanting to take the next step into modern financial teachings.

What is Spriggy?

Spriggy is a money app and prepaid card designed for children aged 6-17 years old. It allows children to set up savings, goals and keep track of what they are spending while giving parents the ability to monitor transactions.

How does Spriggy work?

Spriggy helps parents and children to manage money together to help establish a foundation for lifelong good money habits. A lot of adults struggle with saving money so it makes sense to start when kids are young.

  • Spriggy profiles: The Spriggy app has a parent profile and child profile that allows you to see everything in a snapshot, including the available funds, goals and savings. If you have more than one child, you can add them very easily within the app. Each child gets their own app however if they do not have a device of their own it is as simple as swiping right on your device to switch between profiles.
  • Spriggy money transfers: Spriggy allows parents to transfer money through the app instantly from the Parent Wallet to their child’s account and even schedule regular transfers. This has been a huge benefit for both me and my kids because I would always forget to get cash out for their allowance. Now the kids are happy because each week they are paid and I’m happy because I don’t have to go out of my way to get them money (or hear them nagging that I forgot again). It would also prove very helpful in case of an emergency when immediate funds are required.
  • Prepaid card: The personalised Spriggy prepaid card allows children to make purchases in-store and online with Visa PayWave. Safety concerns? Click here.
  • Savings: One great feature of the app is funds that have been transferred to the child’s savings cannot be accessed on the card. Funds must be moved back to the Spriggy card before it can be spent. The kids get excited when they check their balance and see their progress – their savings growing and their goals getting closer. It’s rewarding for them and me.
  • Cost: While I don’t love that this kids account comes with a fee, I must say that for $30 a year it is a small price to pay for my kids to learn the importance of earning, spending and saving habits with real world practice.

I’ve seen this app around but hadn’t had a chance to look into it. It looks like a great idea for practical money management for kids and teens. It’s definitely given me some food for thought as my high school kids probably need to get a card themselves sooner rather than later…

I’ve just signed up for a Spriggy account for my son. He’s been wanting to be more involved with his money, so this would be a great way to introduce him banking!

Love the fact I can get my son used to using his own key card. He loves the idea too.

My biggest savings tip is to check out the Barefoot Investor for families. We’ve started using this with our daughters and it’s been fantastic for teaching them about money. We’ve been looking at Spriggy too!
