So the school holidays are fast approaching and you’re probably already planning that extended getaway when you can relax, kick back and perhaps go surfing, fishing or swimming (maybe all three!). But what can you do to protect your home while you’re away? Secure your Property
Don’t skimp when it comes to proper locks for your doors and windows. Always buy and fit approved key-operated locks for all external doors and ground level windows. Your local police station, locksmith or security installation company can advise you on the most suitable products for your house. If you’re unsure about installation, get a professional in to do the job for you – and don’t forget to actually lock up the property when you depart for your holiday.
Inform your Neighbours
With any luck, you’ll be on good terms with your neighbours so you can ask them to keep an eye on your home while you’re off surfing and swimming and generally having fun. You can also ask them to take in your mail and, if your trip is going to more than a couple of weeks long, ask very nicely if they’ll keep your lawn trimmed thus giving your house the appearance of actually having people living in it. A nice bottle of wine and some chocolates will definitely help, as will offering to do the same for your neighbours when they go away.
Cancel Newspapers etc.
One of the first things a burglar looks for in a potential target is whether there are stacks of newspapers piling up on the front step – a sure sign of an empty house – so be sure to cancel all regular deliveries (such as milk etc.) while you’re away.
Arrange a House-sitter
If possible, arrange for a friend or relative to house-sit in your absence. There are also professional house-sitter services available but be sure to check references and credentials as burglars and house-breakers have been known to masquerade as house-sitters in order to gain access to unattended properties. If you can’t arrange a trusted house-sitter, then invest in some timers for lamps, TVs and radios. These will switch on different appliances at different times and give the appearance that you’re home when you’re actually off catching huge fish and sun-baking.
Insurance
Before you leave for your awesome holiday, make sure that your home contents insurance is up to date. You might even want to get some travel insurance while you’re updating your home and contents policy. If the worst does happen, there’s nothing worse than the realisation that your insurance has expired.
