5 Tips To Pick The Right Mattress

17/09/2015 By All Mum Said Leave a Comment

5 Tips To Pick The Right Mattress

Don’t just buy the first mattress you lay on! There are things to consider that will save you not only money but also a lot of unnecessary pain.

A mattress is not a cheap investment so it isn’t a decision that should be taken lightly. You will have it for eight to ten years; so you have to be happy and satisfied that it will provide you with everything you need for the years to come.

How to pick the right mattress

There are so many factors to take into consideration to ensure you purchase the right mattress for you. They include:

• Try before you buy – You wouldn’t buy a car without taking it for a test drive; so why should a mattress be any different? Take at minimum 10-15 minutes to lay on each mattress, this will allow you to get a general feel for the type, firmness, etc.
Tip: Do not allow sales people to rush you to the next bed! It is you sleeping on it, not them.

• Know your budget – You need to be realistic with your budget because at the end of the day you want to be comfortable. However this does not mean that you have to buy all the additional ‘fluff and bells’ that are offered to you. Sometimes you may not even need them!
Tip: Bargain and haggle to get the best deal you can. You will be surprised at how much you can save by just asking.

• Research – Before you go in to make the purchase, know what the comparisons available on the market are. While it is often difficult to compare exact models, you can judge based on brands, type of mattress and sales.

• Use tools available – Most stores that specialise in mattresses have their own tools to help make the comparisons easier. These tools assist you in finding the right mattress suited to you and your body. Sleepmaker for example have just started using a new mattress selector tool. This is an online option that helps select the mattress; you simply answer a few specific questions. You will then be directed to your local Sleepmaker mattress stockist that have them available in store so you can give it a test run.

It doesn’t get much more convenient than that! By filtering your requirements and desires in a mattress; the tool will be able to help in selecting the firmness you need to achieve a perfect night sleep. How firm? How plush? Do you suffer back pain? What type is right for you?
Tip: Even after answering the Sleepmaker tools questions to find the right mattress for you, it is important you still try before you buy!

• Warranty – As a result of mattresses being quite costly; it is important to check what warranty is given. Good quality mattresses and trusted brands will often offer no less than 10 years full replacement.

There are so many different types of mattresses available with varying technology so if you have an idea of what you are looking for, it makes it easier to narrow down. Have you had or would you like to try: pillow top, latex, memory foam or inner spring?

On average people will spend 1/3 of their lives sleeping! This is a huge amount; which is why it is important to ensure you are maximising those hours with a quality mattress that is right for you.

Things To Consider Before Installing a Solar Power System

26/08/2015 By All Mum Said Leave a Comment

Factors to Consider Before Installing a Solar Power System

Solar power is no longer a new concept, yet for some reason there is still a lot of hesitation around taking it on as an alternate energy source. A lot of this can be due to misinformation and people not willing to look further. In reality, though, investing in solar is no different to any other lifestyle investment, and can be undertaken by anyone who is willing to do their homework. If you think this is the approach for you, then below are the important factors you do need to consider before installing a solar power system.

Price wars

Although investing in solar energy is a lot more affordable than it was a few years ago, you still have to consider your budget when taking it on. Firstly, look at what you can afford now; for example, can you make an up-front payment? If not, taking on a payment plan could be a more realistic solution. Most solar companies such as Absolute Energy Solutions are fairly flexible with consumers, as they want you to make the move to this renewable resource. Do your research and don’t hesitate to take along a note book of questions when you speak to a provider. Also, know your objectives for investing in solar, and how much energy you consume. Because as you will see below, the more energy you need, the more panels you will have to purchase.

Big or small

When it comes to solar panels, size definitely matters, as the proportions of your product will dictate their overall energy output. The best way to determine what size or how many panels you’ll need is to look at what your current electricity requirements are — make sure you’re being as energy efficient as possible first, though. From here it is fairly straightforward; if you need a lot of energy, you are going to have to invest in a larger system. But vice versa; just because you have an enormous area of roof space does not mean you have to cover the entire thing, especially if this energy isn’t going to be used. It will just end up costing you more to buy and install.

Location, location

When installing solar panels, it’s all about the location. Firstly, you need to think about what area of your roof attracts the most direct sunlight for the largest portion of the day. Although solar panels will still absorb sunshine even when it’s not hitting the mark, direct sunlight will really maximise your solar energy output. For the southern hemisphere this is usually a north-facing orientation. Of course, solar panels don’t have to be installed on the roof; however, this is usually the most convenient, unused space. If you do go ahead with the roof though, make sure it’s stable enough to support your solar panels, and depending on the roof’s angle, you may have to tilt the frames.

These factors are all important, but at the end of the day, the biggest one is what investing in solar will actually mean for you and your home—it should not just be about following a trend, but rather be about lower electricity bills and helping to reduce your environmental impact.

Where do your biggest concerns lie in regards to solar? Tell me below!

The Growing Popularity Of Floor To Ceiling Windows

Exploring The Growing Popularity Of Floor To Ceiling Windows

As building techniques improve and fashions change, the size, shape and style of Australian homes continues to evolve. One of the most striking trends in architecture over recent years has been a move to bigger windows, with a rising number of property owners across the country opting for impressive floor-to-ceiling glazing. But what exactly has caused this phenomenon to take off? Why do we Aussies seem to think that, when it comes to windows at least, bigger is better?

Bathing rooms in natural light to boost our moods

One possible answer is the effect that natural light has on our moods. It’s well known the amount of sunlight we’re exposed to can have a big impact on how we feel and function. For example, it affects our production of the hormone melatonin, which in turn can make us feel more drowsy or alert. Light levels also help to control serotonin, a hormone that affects our mood, sleep and even appetite.

To get an insight into the importance of this issue, it’s useful to look at the impact of exposure to natural light on office workers. According to a study conducted by a team at Northwestern University in Illinois, employees with windows in the workplace reported a better quality of life, less disturbed sleep and fewer physical problems than their counterparts without access to sunlight during the working day.

So, by bathing our rooms in extra sunlight, we could be making ourselves happier and healthier. Even when people want privacy in their properties, they are often still keen to let the light stream in. This is why the translucent sunscreen blinds offered by specialist providers such as CurtainWorld are proving so popular. While offering seclusion, and protection from UV rays, they still allow lots of natural light to enter rooms.

Making the most of the views on offer

We’re certainly not short of impressive views in Australia. From serene ocean vistas to undulating mountain ranges and seemingly endless plains, there are a multitude of scenes to celebrate. Many of the homes with super-sized windows overlook these spectacular landscapes, and this floor-to-ceiling glazing allows their owners to make the very most of the terrain around them.

Buildings designed in this way help people to feel part of their environments when they’re in their properties, rather than being cut off from them.

The epitome of sleek modern design

Then there’s style to consider. These large windows can give properties a sleek, contemporary look that helps to set them apart from more traditional builds. The abundance of glass gives them a minimalist, light and clean appearance that epitomises the best of modern design. Both from the inside and the outside, these features can look simply stunning. They work especially well in uncluttered houses with airy, open plan interiors.

Given the myriad benefits associated with floor to ceiling windows, it’s no surprise that a rising number of people across Australia, and around the world, are choosing to incorporate them into their properties.

3 Ways To Reduce The Stress Of Moving House

14/06/2015 By All Mum Said 2 Comments

Everyone agrees that moving house is exactly zero fun. It can be an extremely stressful and hectic venture. An immense amount of co-ordination is required to simply move one’s belongings from one place to another. So how do you keep your stress level at a minimum while planning to move house? These three simple tips will show you how to keep calm and stay focused on the job.

Reduce Stress Moving House

1. Get organised

Planning ahead is the key to a successful, stress-free move. Depending on the time-frame you have, you should make sure you have booked removalists and transport, gardeners and a bond cleaner with a proven track record—like Absolute Domestics —well in advance. The earlier you book, the better: this will allow you to secure all the services you will need for the days you need them and to also budget the cost of your move more effectively. Knowing which services will be in attendance and at what time will be a substantial load off your already whirling mind, and will help the day run a great deal more smoothly.

2. Be prepared

Once you’ve got all of the professionals squared away, you can begin the gradual process of packing your belongings up. Get yourself lots of boxes and earmark somewhere in the house you can temporarily store them, like the garage. Anything small and not frequently required can be packed up first. Packing gradually over time reduces stress substantially because it means you can slowly pick and choose what needs to go away. Whittle your belongings down to only the items that get the most frequent use, like cutlery or the TV, and pack those away the night before your move. Have coolers on standby for anything in your fridge and freezer, and begin defrosting them the day before the move. All of this prep work gives you is the ability to maximise the efficiency of your removalists on the day. They can start loading everything without preamble and you can focus on any other issues the day may throw at you.

3. Don’t rush

Take your time in every facet of the move, from the planning stages to the big day itself. Rushing ahead means you’re more likely to miss an important step or consideration, which will in turn lead to headaches on your moving day. Be methodical. Use the time you’ve got up your sleeve to create contingency plans so that if anything changes—for example, the removalists can’t make it due to a truck breakdown—you’ve got a solution for that particular problem ready to go.

Moving house doesn’t have to be a stressful experience, even when your landlord has delivered a notice to vacate within a month or less. Take it slow, plan accordingly, make the necessary arrangements and you’ll find you’ve got plenty of time left over to house hunt and handle any new problems that may present themselves. Don’t worry, be proactive! And good luck.

3 Things to Look for When Buying a New Mattress

12/06/2015 By All Mum Said Leave a Comment

Have you noticed your mattress is less comfortable or supportive than it used to be? Are you tossing and turning all night? It could be time to trade in your mattress for a new one. If you’re planning on doing so, here are three critical things to look for when you hit the shops.

Buying A New Mattress

1. The right support

We all have our own unique set of needs when it comes to a mattress. Some basic things include our height, weight and how active we are. Some people also have existing injuries or problems, particularly with their spines, that require specialist support. Then, of course, there is personal preference with regards to mattress firmness and what positions we like to sleep in. A good starting point is to head to a bedding specialist, such as Sleepy’s, who can provide professional and expert advice on the type of mattresses available and which ones will provide you with optimal support and comfort. Retailers who specialise in bedding usually offer a better range of mattresses, especially those that are endorsed by experts such as physiotherapists and chiropractors. Make sure you try out mattresses made from different materials, such as inner spring, memory foam and latex.

2. Comfort guaranteed

When you are trying out mattresses in shops, be sure to have a good lie on them – aim for 10 to 15 minutes. Do your best to push aside any embarrassment you have about doing this; a mattress is an expensive and very important purchase, so you want to make the best choice possible. For complete peace of mind about your purchase, make sure you buy your mattress from a retailer who provides a guarantee that will allow for a return or exchange if your chosen mattress doesn’t end up being right for you.

3. Maintenance requirements

While buying a quality mattress is important, knowing how to look after it is vital. The type of mattress you buy will determine how you need to look after it. Some mattresses need to be rotated or turned while others do not. Also, many of the materials now used in mattresses are sensitive to household cleaning products, so knowing how best to clean them is key. A good retailer will be able to provide you with all of this information as well as supplying products that are designed to protect your mattress. If you don’t already have mattress protectors, you need to buy some. They come in a range of different types, including slip-on protectors (much like a fitted sheet) or encasements that completely cover the whole mattress. You can also add an additional layer of comfort and protection by purchasing a mattress topper. Again, these come in a variety of forms and a good retailer will carry a good range of these and be able to suggest the best products to suit your needs.

Buying a mattress is a very significant purchase – and not just because they’re expensive. We spend approximately one third of our lives sleeping, so getting a comfortable mattress that properly supports your body is critical.

Do you have any tips you think others should know when buying a new mattress?
