5 Tax deductible Super Contributions you want to know

Superannuation and taxation are two things that baffle and confuse many people. Many of us feel ill-equipped to keep track of and manage our super but with the help of experts such Super Claims Australia , it’s entirely possible to claim what you are entitled to. Self-education and organisation will also allow you to keep track of your funds and feel confident that they are being effectively managed as you work towards retirement.

Types of Super Contributions

In general terms, two kinds of contributions to superannuation can be made: contributions that are non-concessional (after tax) and concessional contributions which are made before tax. Concessional contributions may include superannuation contributions which are tax deductible, in the event that a deduction is claimed by an individual.

It’s definitely worthwhile finding out (or having your financial adviser inform you) of the concessional contributions for which you are eligible. For example, in the 2013/2014 financial year, an eligible person under the age of 60 years was able to make concessional contributions of up to $25,000. If aged 59 years or older as at 30 June 2013, make concessional contributions of up to $35,000 for the year.

In the 2014/2015 year, concessional contributions of up to $30,000 per year can be made by an eligible person under the age of 50 years. If a person is aged 49 years or older on 30 June 2014, they are able to make concessional contributions of up to $35,000 for the year.

Eligibility to Claim Tax Deductible Super Contributions

1. If you are self-employed (or self-employed to a significant extent) or if you are unemployed (for example a full-time investor or carer of small children), it is possible to claim a tax deduction for the contributions you make to your super. These are treated as concessional contributions.

2. Employees are usually not able to claim a tax deduction for voluntarily-made contributions to their superannuation funds. However, similar tax benefits are available by making salary sacrifice contributions. Also, if you are an employee and are able to fulfil the 10% income test rule (see number 3), it may be possible to receive a tax reduction as a result of making a super contribution.

3. It’s well worth knowing about the 10% income test rule. If your situation sees you receive part of your income as an employee, but less than 10% of your assessable income (plus contributions made through salary sacrifice arrangements, plus reportable fringe benefits) can be attributed to employment as an employee, you may comply with the conditions of the 10% income test rule. While it may sound quite complicated, it’s definitely worth investigating whether you qualify.

4. Within a super fund, all tax deductible super contributions and other contributions of a concessional nature are taxed at a rate of 15%. This means that trying to claim a tax deduction for super contributions may be less tax effective than paying less than 15 cents in the dollar as income tax.

5. It’s very important to ensure that you notify your super fund in writing if you plan to claim a tax deduction for a monetary contribution to your super. You need to provide your super fund with this information before lodging your tax return for the financial year. Alternatively, you should let you super fund know that you plan to claim a tax deduction for a super contribution by the end of the financial year that follows the year that the contribution was made, if this is earlier.

For some people, claiming for deductions through super is a good idea but it’s necessary to understand all of the rules that apply, and very wise to obtain the guidance of a qualified financial professional.

Hello Kitty & Sponky *Review*

In the lead up to Christmas there are so many new toys hitting the shelves hoping to be put in trolleys and wrapped as gifts. I have been sent so many releases asking for reviews and have had to turn down several due to lack of time. However last week I was gifted a couple of products in hopes to be featured and the look on Poppets face when I opened the box made the decision for me. They were going to be shared with my amazing fans.

Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty Jumbo Jet playset is the latest release of Hello Kitty merchandise. The Jet is great for little ones ages 18 months+ because it not only encourages their imagination but it is the perfect size for them. In the box you will find a rolling Hello Kitty Jumbo Jet and baggage trolley (service vehicle) along with 2 pieces of luggage, Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel.

The Hello Kitty Jumbo Jet can actually hook onto the trolley and be towed along as all the wheels move. I like that the main door to the passenger cabin and cockpit open up easily so little hands can use it without assistance. The baggage compartment on the jet also opens up however this is a little tricky for Poppet to open as it requires the sides to be pushed before it opens and her fingers aren’t yet strong enough but I don’t think it will be much longer before she can. (She is almost 18 months old). I think this would make a great addition under the tree this year for the toddler in your life as it is guaranteed to provide hours of fun. Sponky

What on Earth is Sponky? I had never heard of the brand until recently and while the name may be funny their baby toys are great. My nephew is going to love them!

The Sponky Comforter Blanket is absolutely adorable.  His neutral colours make him ideal for both boys and girls and his plush blanket makes him perfect for cuddles before bed. He also features teething feet to help get your little one through the tough times. You can purchase him for $14.95 from Sponky stockists.

The Sponky Stretch and Clip is great for when venturing out of the house but your little one still wants to be amused. Whether you are in the car or taking a walk with the pram it can provide your child with fun while being securely strapped in. Christmas Cookies recipe + D.I.Y gifts

I love Christmas time. Not only for the magic and tinsel but also the food. The warm aromatic spice-filled food. Actually just make that all food. Today I’m sharing with you a very quick and simple recipe for festive cookies that make the perfect gift for teachers, neighbours, plates of food for class parties, etc. They taste like what I imagine Christmas would if it had a flavour. Each bite is full of texture, warm spice and deliciousness.

Christmas Cookies recipe

INGREDIENTS
1 1/3  cup plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup oats
3/4 cup chocolate buttons/smarties (we used red and green)
3/4 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tbsp McCormick ground Cinnamon
1/2 tsp McCormick ground Nutmeg
½ tsp McCormick ground All Spice
1 egg
1/2 cup melted butter
1 tsp vanilla extract

METHOD – Standard Cookies
1. Pour all dry ingredients into a bowl.
2. Mix egg, butter and vanilla extract into dry ingredients.
3. Use spatula or large spoon to work it all together.
4. Roll cookie dough into table spoon size balls, place on baking tray (lined with baking paper) and bake at 180°c for approx. 10 minutes or until golden. If you want crunchy cookies leave for an extra 4-5 minutes.
5. Let cool for a few minutes before moving them to cooling rack.

METHOD – Mini Muffin Cookies
1. Follow steps 1-3 as shown above.
2. Spray/grease mini muffin tray.
3. Roll balls to approx. 1/2 teaspoon size and add to mini muffin tray. Bake at 180°c for approx. 7-8 minutes or until golden.
4. Let cool for a few minutes before moving them to cooling rack.

Gift Ideas

Cookies In a Jar
1. Layer all the dry ingredients in a jar.
2. Put some Christmas ribbon around it.
3. Add cooking method including wet ingredients for the gift recipient.

Method for tag: Pour dry cookie mixture from the jar into a bowl. Mix 1 egg, 1/2 cup melted butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract into dry ingredients. Use back of large spoon to work it all together. Roll cookie dough into tablespoon size balls, place on baking paper lined trays and bake in preheated oven 180°c for about 10 minutes or until golden. Makes 24 cookies.

Wrapped
1. Cut a piece of baking paper large enough to fit a few cookies in.
2. Pull the baking paper up around the cookies and secure with some Christmas ribbon.
