08/05/2015 By All Mum Said 38 Comments

Mother’s Day is this Sunday (10th May) and we all know it is the one day of the year mums should be spoilt and shown appreciation for their all their hard work each and every day. Because mums are so special and should be treated as such, All Mum Said has teamed up Krispy Kreme to bring you and your mum an amazing giveaway full of indulgent products to help mum kick back and relax.

Spread the joy to all mothers this weekend and celebrate what it means to be a mum. While it can be tough sometimes, the kids may drive you mad (you did it to your mum as well so it is just karma saying hello), your house may get trashed the second the kids step foot inside but they also fill our hearts with so much happiness.

Introducing Solid Foods to your Baby

07/05/2015 By All Mum Said 6 Comments

Introducing Solid Foods to your Baby

What age should you start introducing solid foods to your baby? This is a very common question for new mothers. Obviously each child is different but on average it is when your baby is around 4 months to 6 months old. The questions then turn to what to feed them? What brands offer the most nutritional food for my baby? How much do they eat? As you answer one question, you will have another to back it up. This is normal and introducing solid foods to your baby is both scary and exciting.

How do you know when your baby is ready for solid foods? It is often by them exhibiting curiosity to what you are eating and opening their mouth when offered food. They should be able to control their head and neck along with being able to sit aided. My children often tried to grab food out of my hands to try, I took this as a sign they wanted more than just milk. They started solids around 4 months.

Babies initially won’t be interested in eating for long durations as they get full very quickly or get distracted. This is completely normal. Infants often start with 1-2 teaspoons and can be increased as their appetite does.

What brand is best? I have 3 children (with another on the way) and we tried so many brands of baby food. This was to be expected because you want the best for your child and parents will go to great lengths to ensure they are giving their baby not only the greatest quality available but also nutrition and flavour. As I said we tried lots of brands; Heinz, Rafferty’s Garden, Ella’s Kitchen, Bellamy’s, Only Organic and any other brand you will find on the supermarket shelf. While all these brands are good and offer great benefits; for one reason or another we always came back to Heinz.

I like the fact that even though Heinz is convenient for busy parents; the new recipes contain no preservatives, artificial colours or flavours which makes them delicious and nutritious meals for little tummies. They are more than just convenient, they consist of just the good stuff.  My kids always loved the Heinz recipes and I’m sure baby number 4 will be no exception, especially as Heinz continue to improve and keep relevant with modern requirements of both nutrition and families expectations. The new flavours and recipes are approved by nutritionists who are passionate about flavours and are mums themselves. So you can guarantee the consideration taken into the production process at every point in their country Victoria kitchen is fantastic. From the sourcing of quality ingredients, to how they are steamed cooked and taste tested to ensure quality and flavour.

Why do parents use pre-packaged baby foods? As a result of our busy lifestyles, work, children, etc. parents don’t always have time every single day to make a special batch of baby food. Well I don’t anyway. This is why I relied on the convenience of nutritional jar and pouch foods on many occasions. I didn’t feel guilty by not having prepared each of their meals from scratch as I was confident it was good for my infant and I had trust in the brand I was feeding to my children. Instead of feeling ‘mother’s guilt’, I got to enjoy and bond with my baby over the excitement of learning to eat different foods and textures.

Is home cooked or pre-packaged better? My children enjoyed both and all three of them are happy and healthy. They also have a relaxed mother who thanks to having the option of convenient pre-packaged trusted quality and nutritious meals, never felt overwhelmed by the pressure of having to ensure they had a perfect home cooked lunch/dinner every day. Of course when I had time I would cook in bulk and freeze baby food but variety is a must to keep little ones excited and interested. I found mashed potato, pumpkins and carrots were an easy option as each time it was served to the family the baby could enjoy it as well. There is no right or wrong answer for this one, it comes down to parents’ preference. Introducing solid foods to your baby can be daunting but it can also be the perfect time for some additional bonding.

What else should I know? While checking the latest recipes suitable for introducing solid foods to your baby, I discovered that on the Heinz for baby website they also have page dedicated to infant nutrition and health. It shares tips on nutrition, how to start feeding your baby solids, what foods to initially offer and much more. There is also a page of recipes that incorporate Heinz baby food but that also offer your child a whole new experience of flavours and textures for each specific age. This is not only a great tool for expanding their taste buds but it also encourages them to try new foods from a young age. As both my husband and I are chefs this is something we have always encouraged in our home. The Heinz for Baby Facebook page also regularly shares tips to help make this transition a smooth one for both you and your infant.

Your child will not like everything they try but if they don’t try or aren’t given the opportunity to trial new flavours they could become a very fussy eater. Keep in mind that if your baby doesn’t like something at first don’t push it, just try again at a later date.

The joy on their very messy little faces is one that I will treasure forever.

What do you food do you feed your baby? Home cooked, pre-packaged or a mix of both?

Pregnancy & Baby – Gaia Products + Giveaway

06/05/2015 By All Mum Said 26 Comments

Pregnancy and baby products are something you will need at one point or another (if you are having kids of course which I presume you are because you are reading this). Trying to find the ‘right’ products for you and your child can be a long and exhausting one because there are so many available that claim to be the best. The best for one family however may not be the best for yours. I have put together a review on some of pregnancy and baby products that Gaia Skin Naturals have to offer. Oh and there is a giveaway for one lucky fan as well so they can try the products for themselves. Yay!!

Gaia Pregnancy Products

Gaia Skin + Body Belly Butter

I don’t know about you but when I am pregnant my belly, breasts and thighs itch from the skin stretching and it is not a pleasant feeling. Finding a cream or butter that helps minimise this is usually on the top of my purchase list. The Gaia Belly Butter is enriched with pure cocoa butter, certified organic Shea butter and rosehip oil which helps maintain the suppleness and elasticity of your changing skin. You simply massage the butter into your belly, breasts and thighs twice daily (or as needed) during pregnancy and as long as required after birth. Available in a 150ml tube for $17.95.

Gaia Skin + Body Nipple Balm

This nipple balm is new to the Gaia product range but it is one that all breastfeeding mothers should consider. This organic nipple balm moisturises, soothes and protects sore and cracked nipples which assist in keeping them in good condition for your baby to latch onto during breastfeeding. I love that the scent isn’t overpowering and as it is made from pure, edible organic oils, including sunflower and avocado, there is no need to rinse before feeding. You don’t need to use a lot of this product at once as a little goes a long way. Available in a 40ml tube for $12.95.

Gaia Pure Pregnancy Belly Oil

This belly oil is very similar to the belly butter, obviously in an oil form. It assists the skin in stretching and eases the dry itch thanks to the certified organic rosehip, jojoba and wheat germ oils. The Gaia belly oil is in a convenience spray bottle so you can spray directly onto the area and massage it in. Available in a 95ml spray bottle for $17.95.

 Gaia Baby Products

Gaia Natural Baby Bamboo Baby Wipes

I must admit and say that I have used one particular brand of baby wipes since my eldest was a baby with the exception of a few here and there. I have stuck with the same brand because they have always been the best that I have tried, until now. I absolutely love these bamboo wipes. Why? Because they are strong and I am without a doubt positive my finger will never tear through one in the worst possible moment. That in itself is reason enough to try them. These 100% biodegradable bamboo baby wipes are lightly scented but thanks to their sensitive skin formula I am not concerned about rashes or skin flare ups. I am surprised that given how strong they are, these wipes are unbelievably soft.

The Gaia Bamboo Baby Wipes are available in 3 sizes: 20’s travel pack – $2.99, 80’s pack – $6.50 and the 240’s value pack – $14.95.

Gaia Natural Baby Skin Soothing Lotion

Keeping baby’s skin soft and moisturised is important for parents. This is one of the harder products to choose because we regularly use it on newborns, babies and toddlers. We fear their sensitive skin will not be able to tolerate some of these products so often act on the side of caution. Thankfully Gaia has a multipurpose soothing lotion designed for use on their faces, body and nappy area to sooth and protects skin while remaining pure, natural and organic. It has a light calming scent of lavender without being overpowering and the zinc, castor oil and beeswax ingredients provide a barrier, making this lotion last longer on skin. Available in 100ml tube for $9.99.

Gaia Natural Baby Conditioning Detangler

My daughter is just shy of two and her hair is rapidly growing which means upkeep and hair maintenance is now vital. Due to the length of her hair it is knotty every morning, brushing her hair was a task in itself however the struggle is now a distant memory. The Gaia hair detangler is amazing!! With just a few sprays of the leave in conditioner, the brush glides through her now silky smooth hair. Maintaining and tying up her hair is a breeze. Available in a 200ml spray for $9.99.

Prize Includes: 1x Gaia Skin + Body Belly Butter – 150ml (RRP $17.95), 1x Gaia Skin + Body Nipple Balm – 40ml (RRP $12.95), 1x Gaia Pure Pregnancy Belly Oil – 95ml (RRP $17.95), 1x Gaia Natural Baby Bamboo Baby Wipes – travel pack (RRP $2.99), 1x Gaia Natural Baby Bamboo Baby Wipes – value pack (RRP $14.95), 1x Gaia Natural Baby Skin Soothing Lotion – 100ml (RRP $9.99). Total Prize Pool $76.80.

Medicare Vs Health Insurance

01/05/2015 By All Mum Said 2 Comments

Women’s Health Checks: Medicare Vs Health Insurance

There are several health checks that are recommended for women, including pap tests, pelvic exams, blood pressure checks and STI screenings. Some of the tests can be partially or fully covered by Medicare and for those that aren’t, you may be able to get some help from health insurance. Here, we look at some of the tests that are recommended for women and how much support you can expect from Medicare.

Pap/Smear Tests

Pap tests are recommended every 2 years by the Department of Health for all women aged 18 to 70 who have had sexual intercourse. This will pick up abnormalities in the cervix that could lead to cervical cancer further down the line. Up to 90 per cent of cervical cancers can be detected through pap tests. Around 200 Australian women are believed to die each year as a result of cervical cancer – the vast majority of which had not had pap tests.

The Medicare Situation: Due to the Department of Health’s efforts to raise awareness of cervical cancer, Australian women do not need to pay for the pap test itself. However, there may be a fee for the services of the medical professional carrying out the test.

STI Screening

Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) do not have symptoms so you may not realise that you have one if you are not being tested regularly. Chlamydia is a common example of this and can affect fertility. Yearly tests are recommended if you are sexually active and at risk of picking up an STI. The exact nature of what is involved will depend on the STI that you’re being tested for and can be vaginal swabs, urine samples, blood tests and physical examinations. Doctors, family planning centres and sexual health clinics can all carry out STI tests.

The Medicare Situation: STI tests may be free of charge with a valid Medicare card. If this is not the case, you will usually be obliged to pay pathology-related costs.

Pelvic Exams

Pelvic examinations go much further than pap tests and can highlight irregularities with the pelvic organs such as the uterus, cervix, Fallopian tubes, ovaries and bladder. This may be recommended if you have pelvic or abdominal pain, for example. It can be in the form of an ultrasound scan but if a condition such as endometriosis is suspected, it may involve a laparoscopy instead. The latter procedure is done under anaesthetic and involves the insertion of a small camera to get a better look at the pelvic organs.

The Medicare Situation: A Medicare rebate is available for pelvic ultrasounds but there may still be some out of pocket costs, especially if you do not have health insurance.

The Health Insurance Situation: A pelvic ultrasound can be covered by private health insurance if it is requested by a doctor for diagnosis of a problem. Many health funds will include minor gynaecological procedures on Hospital cover but this will not necessarily extend to a laparoscopy procedure.

Blood Pressure Checks

Even if your blood pressure is typically normal, it is advisable to have it checked at least once per year. Risk factors include being overweight, not getting enough exercise, smoking, and a family history of heart disease. Heart disease is a big issue for Australian women, and it’s actually the leading cause of death (much more than breast cancer). High blood pressure often has no symptoms and can put added strain on the heart and lead to problems such as heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and eye and kidney problems.

The Medicare Situation: Your GP can check your blood pressure at appointments. One high reading does not necessarily indicate high blood pressure but if there is ongoing concern about your readings, you may be referred for an Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring test. This will monitor your blood pressure over the course of 24 hours for a much clearer picture of how your readings may alter during the day and night. There is no Medicare rebate for this so you can expect out-of-pocket costs if you need this test.

The Health Insurance Situation: As well as regular blood pressure checks at the GP surgery, you may also want to use a blood pressure monitor to take readings at home more regularly. Some health funds cover the costs of these kind of health-related appliances on Extras policies, especially if you are diagnosed with high blood pressure and/or your GP has advised that you do keep a close check on your blood pressure. Bear in mind that not all health funds will offer this option and for those that do, you may need to have relatively broad Extras cover.

Breast & Bowel Cancer Screenings

As you get older, the risk of breast cancer and bowel cancer increases.

Mammograms are recommended every couple of years from the age of 50 but your GP may suggest that you have one earlier than this if there are concerns about your breast health and/or there is a family history of breast cancer.

Bowel cancer screening is also recommended from the age of 50, and will involve doing an at-home test to check whether there is any blood in your stool. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have bowel cancer but you are at much greater risk of developing it if the test is positive.

The Medicare Situation: Mammograms are free through Breast Screen Australia from the ages of 50 to 65 on a 2-yearly basis. Bowel cancer testing kits are also free of charge for Australians aged 50, 55, 60 and 65. There are plans to extend this for ages in between this.

Medicare provides a strong – but ultimately incomplete – safety net for Women’s Health checks. The right Private Health Insurance policy fills these gaps and provides a holistic approach to coverage in conjunction with the public system.
