Working On Something Great!

06/10/2012 By All Mum Said 8 Comments

I know it has been quiet around here the past few days and that is for a very good reason! A few reasons actually however one that will get everyone excited but I can’t tell you just yet – patience young Jedi!! I will soon.

I have had my sister in law come and stay and the day she left my mother and father in law thought they might stop by for a few nights. They are all welcome but it has just meant that I couldn’t be super rude and just leave them so I could go and write. They are out at the moment buying stuff for dinner so I thought I would quickly get a post written explaining my absence. I have not forgotten about announcing the winners of the Nature’s Child giveaway either. I will get onto that tonight and announce them tomorrow. Don’t forget to enter the other 3 giveaways on the blog – they end soon!!
I am so excited about the awesomeness that I am planning for you all and you will not want to miss it. (On another completely random note – when I typed awesomeness it didn’t prompt me to fix the spelling.) hahaha. According to my laptop it is a word! Way to go Microsoft Word you know me too well!

I cannot wait to share more details with you soon but just wanted to let you know that I have been super busy preparing this and have not just dropped off the face of the Earth. More details to come soon  J
Oh and a little something exciting for me ~ my blog turned 6 months old yesterday!! Thank you all for your support. x

What are your plans for the rest of the weekend?

A Not So Warm Welcome Home…

28/07/2012 By All Mum Said 13 Comments

When getting home from a holiday what is the first thing you generally want to do? Have a shower? Unpack? Make a coffee?

We would have loved to all the above! Life had other plans. As we pulled into the driveway we opened the garage door and drove on in. We grabbed the few bags of groceries we had purchased on our way home with contents for dinner. That is when it occurred to us the door was locked and neither of us had the key.

Yes that’s right we were away for 2 weeks and neither one of us had bought the house keys with us. We were locked out, it was late Saturday afternoon so there was no calling the real estate to get the spare set (not that it would have helped anyway, they are 3 hours away from us). We search the windows but to no avail. They along with all the doors were locked. We had no option left but to smash a window.

So my husband smashed the laundry window, it was the smallest and we could unlock the doors by reaching through. We were inside, finally! Fuck now there is glass everywhere and I mean everywhere!!

While I dragged all the bags, luggage and shopping inside my darling man decided to clean up all the glass when it occurred to him there was water on the floor, mixed in with the glass. Where could that be from you ask?

Well our house is pretty dodgy when it comes to most things, electrical is no different. So before we went on our trip my husband turned off the TV points, the kitchen appliances, washing machine and dryer and anything that may have been sharing the power point like oh yeah, how could I forget…..

The Chest Freezer that was full of food!!

My husband opened the freezer to check – BIG MISTAKE!

The smell was deadly, it had us all dry reaching and the kids and I were at the other end of the house. That is how bad it was but you would expect that for 2 week old defrosted meat, chicken, prawns, etc. Anything that can be frozen was in there.

The afternoon was spent cleaning, bleaching, disinfecting and trying to get rid of the awful smell. The laundry door has to stay open or the smell seems to return like it was never gone. The freezer I have achieved getting it to smell something like vanilla – thank goodness for vanilla!!

So that is 2 evils in the matter of 5 minutes, what else could possibly happen?

They say bad things come in 3’s and they weren’t wrong. While we away a family of ducks have decided to call our yard home. They have shit EVERYWHERE!! They are loud and they don’t want to leave. Vacate notice ignored….

WELCOME HOME!!

Have you been welcomed home with any disasters? I would love to hear them. If you haven’t make one up so I don’t feel as bad. PLEASE!!

The Big Question – G or E?

08/07/2012 By All Mum Said 22 Comments

My 5 year old has become very inquisitive lately and has begun asking a lot of questions that I didn’t think I would have to have an answer for, well many years to come.

There has been one stand out question though that required an answer I couldn’t give with 100% certainty. He asks – If there used to be no people in our world where did we come from? How did we get here?

Yes that’s right – from a 5 year old! Where did he even come up with this question – it was 7am for crying out loud.

Now I don’t generally broadcast my belief system as I don’t want to sway my kids in any which one direction. I am an Atheist or at least I think I am. It’s not that I don’t believe in God, it’s just that I don’t think I do either. I am a fence sitter. I’d like to believe there is something whatever it may be!

I was always given the choice growing up to join a religion or to not and I never felt the need. I have also felt that it is not my place to say my kids can’t believe in God just because I’m not religious. Mr 5 asked if I could show him a church so I did and explained all about God to him (to the best of my knowledge that a 5 year old would understand). So when the question of how did people get here arose I faced it front on with an honest answer and sleep filled eyes.

My response – No one really knows for sure. It is a great mystery but some people think that God made people when he was making everything else like the trees, butterflies, beaches and everything else we have. The other people think that over a really really long time monkeys started to change into people. I then showed him a picture of the evolution chart to explain it a bit more clearly.

He did have a question that made me laugh. “So when Nanny was a baby was she a monkey?” ‘Nanny’ is only 45 she is nearly old enough. I tried to explain how long ago it was and the best description I could come up with was just after the dinosaurs died.

I felt I handled this question without any persuasion of beliefs. It is ultimately his decision and when he is old enough he will make it. Until then I will continue to answer and encourage any belief or curiosity he may have.

Now I understand religion and beliefs are a tough topic to talk about so I understand if people don’t agree with my method (or have even read up to this point) and I want to say that that is OK. I encourage everyone to believe in what they want regardless what that may be and to not feel judged or pressured.

How do you think I handled the big Q?

What questions have you been surprised by?

Forgive Me Hairdresser!

24/06/2012 By All Mum Said 11 Comments

Forgive Me Hairdresser!

Forgive me hairdresser, it has been 6 months since my last cut and colour! My split ends are extreme and I look very similar to a skunk (only reversed). I am ashamed of how bad I have let this become and promise tomorrow I will rectify the damage I have caused.

This is me but in reverse and not as fancy or well known!
Oh and of course I smell like freshly cut flowers.
I know that I am not alone when it comes to feeling the want, the desire, the need to refresh and change something! For so many this is simply accomplished by a change of hair colour, a cut, a facial, etc. I am no different!  I love nothing more than going to the hairdresser with no idea what to get done and then leaving looking and feeling like a completely different person. I love the confidence a new cut and colour can instantly bring. I go from feeling tired, exhausted and boring to self-assured, sexy and ready to take on anything besides the rain or wind that may destroy my perfectly styled hair!

My problem (and I’m sure there will be so many others in the same boat) is that I don’t go nearly as often as I should or would like to for one reason or another. The main culprits are lack of time one week and no money the next but not this week!!

My appointment is made and I am going to get sexified and a bloody good head massage (which I should add never goes for long enough!) I have no idea what colour I’m going to get, I was thinking red but as I have blonde currently I’m not sure that’s a great idea – bring on pink says my 15 year old self! Not sure if I’ll get it cut short or keep some length and I tend not to really think about it too much. I like the surprise!

I am also wondering is it just me or are there other Mums out there who would just like the hairdressers to shut up occasionally? Don’t get me wrong, I love a little bit of chatter – how are the kids, what have you been up to, etc. But I personally love nothing more than enjoying my coffee in peace and quiet! It is really the only time I am away from everyone at home and don’t HAVE to speak. I enjoy some quiet!

Do you plan what cut/style and colour you are going to get before you arrive or do you wing it like me?
