It is a crazy time at the moment and many women are finding that their local stores have been wiped clean of sanitary and period products and are in search of something a little more sustainable. A reusable option.
This is where the idea to finally try Modibodi came about. I’ll be the first person to say that I either skipped my periods entirely or used pads and tampons as my monthly products. However, with this option taken away (although only temporary), it has made me consider alternative options. I’m sure I’m not alone in wondering… do Modibodi period underwear really work?
Read this review to find out.
What is Modibodi?
Modibodi underwear are sustainable and reusable period and light bladder leakage apparel. They replace the need for disposable pads, panty liners, tampons and incontinence products.
As you can see on the Modibodi website, they use high quality, tech-savvy fabrics (like Bamboo, Merino Perform Wool and Microfibre) and the latest in breathable, antimicrobial fibres with our Australian patented Modifier Technology™ – a super slim (only 3mm) stain-resistant lining for modern periods and leaks, and Modifier Air Technology™ – a moisture-wicking, odour-fighting lining for getting sweaty.
Modibodi period underwear review
There are a number of bikini styles and absorbencies available for men, women and teens. But for the purpose of this review, I tested three different pairs. Classic bikini in light-moderate absorbency, seamfree full brief in moderate-heavy protection and classic bikini in heavy/overnight absorbency.
I will be honest… I have considered trying these products in the past for the purpose of being more environmentally friendly but I was always sceptical. Sceptical if they’d actually work, if they’d hold fluid like tampons and pads do, if they’d leak and leave me with embarrassing stains on my clothing.
After using the Modibodi period underwear for a week I feel I can confidently review these products.
Classic Bikini: Light-Moderate Absorbency
I used these on day 1 of my period and the post period day (you know, the ‘HA, I’m back’ period revenge day). They hold 1-1.5 tampons / 1-2 teaspoons / 5-10 ml worth of fluid. I found these underwear were more than adequate for me on these days however, it would really depend on your flow.
Seamfree Full Brief: Moderate-Heavy Protection
Now, the granny panties… Ok, let’s call them high waisted underwear. These were good for day 2 as they hold 2-3 tampons / 3 teaspoons / 15 ml worth of fluid. More than one pair of these may be required depending on your flow.
Classic Bikini: Heavy / Overnight Absorbency
These were best for during the middle of my cycle and nights as they offered much more absorbency than the others. You could feel these offered more protection as the absorbency sections were thicker. Still comfortable but definitely thicker. Given these are thicker, I was impressed that you couldn’t see the underwear through clothing. They hold 2 tampons / 3 teaspoons / 15-20 ml of fluid.
Do Modibodi products work?
Are Modibodi period underwear comfortable? YES. I cannot comment on all styles but the ones reviewed here are incredibly comfortable.
How many pairs of period underwear do you need? This really depends on your flow. Some days I only needed the one pair however other days when my period was heavier, more pairs were definitely needed.
What do you do with the underwear when you need to change them? This really depends on where you are. If you are at home like I have been (in Covid-19 lockdown) than you simply swap them for a fresh pair and take your used ones to the laundry, rinsed them out and then wash them. If you are out, or at work, I think a wet bag would probably be ideal so you can store them and then sort them out when you get home.
How do you wash them? Rinse in cold water until the water runs clear, wash in machine, hang dry and reuse as needed. Modibodi has recommended that you avoid using fabric softener on these as it reduces effectiveness.
What do you do with the blood clots? As much as no one wants to talk about this, I know many people will want to know what happens with the clots. Basically, it is just the same as using a disposable pad… when you go to the toilet you simply remove them and carry on about your day.
Do they draw blood away from your body? YES. I was pleasantly surprised that the fluids were absorbed almost immediately. I didn’t feel dirty wearing the reusable underwear (one of my biggest reasons for not trying them sooner).
Do Modibodi underwear leak? I’ll be honest, minor leakage occurred on one day but it was after wearing them all day and my period was just heavier than I realised. I couldn’t fault the underwear themselves.
If one good thing has come from Coronavirus and stock shortages in supermarkets, it is that I have been forced into trying more sustainable and reusable options in place of disposable sanitary products. While I typically try to use more environmentally friendly options, these products have always had me sitting on the fence. Until now.
The Modibodi period underwear are great to wear on their own or as a backup for extra protection with other products.
